Lighted Cigarette Cause Of Marseilles Blaze. EXPERTS REPORT ISSUED. (Received 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 6. "The Times" Marseilles correspondent says that the report of the experts investigating the Marseilles fire of last October attributes it to a workman throwing a cigarette 011 to tar-soaked boxes and subsequently attempting to l>eat out the flames with his cap and thus fanning them.
One of the greatest fires ever experienced in modern Kmopjp occurred in the heart of Marseilles shopping and hotel area on October 29 of last year. Five acres of building in two blocks surrounding the city's main street were destroyed and damage estimated at over £500,000 was done. The Prime Minister, M. Daladier. directed the rescue work, and Congress was adjourned as an act of mourning. 11. Daladier rushed into a burning hotel building to endeavour to recover valuable State documents locked in one of the rooms.
The blaze originated in a store, Lea Xouvelles Galeries, in which building alone over 15 bodies were discovered. The total lose of life was over 100.
