SPANISH WAR ECHO. British Ship And 800 Refugees Held By French. DUNEDIN MAN'S STORY. United Press Association.—Copyright. (Received 10 a.m.) LOXDOX, July 0. Murn Mac Donald, of Dunedin, who fought with the International Brigade in Spain against the Franco forces, has returned from Oran.
He said the British freighter African Trader, which ran the Franco blockade during the civil war, has been tied up at Oran quayside since the end of the conflict with 800 Spanish refugees.
They are allowed only as far as the quay, where barbed-wire barricades are guarded by Senegalese troops.
The French authorities arrested the ship and are forcing the captain to pav for the upkeep of the refugees.
FLIGHT FROM SPAIN. Former Republican Officers' Long Swim. ALGECIRAS TO GIBRALTAR. 1 {Received 0.30 a.m.) GIBRALTAR, July 6. Sixteen former Republican officers of the Carabiniers landed after swimming ! for hours from Algeciras in order to escape from the Franco Administration. One died from exhaustion on the beach. All carried loaded * revolvers. Large crowds gathered on elevated positions watching for others reported to be swimming to the Rock. 1
