RECORD SCORES AT START OF BRITISH GOLF OPEN.
The British open gcAt championship commenced yesterday with records being created on the two courses where the big' field of over 300 was divided for the first of the two qualifying rounds. Three players, James Bruen, the young Irish amateur champion, Lawson Little, U.S.A. professional and former American and British amateur champion, and Percy Arliss, British professional, had rounds of 60, and their performances have been recognised by the committee as course records. Bruen and Little were playing on the old course, of which the scratch score is 75, and Arliss on the new course. Last year Arliss missed the entry. A. D. "Bobby" Locke (South Africa) took 74, but the United Press Association telegram received this morning does not give Henry Cotton's round. To-day the second qualifying round is played, the contestants changing courses. At the end of the preliminary play over the 36 holes only' a maximum of 130 players continue in the championship proper of 72 holes. The scores in the preliminary play do not count, apart from deciding 'who qualifies, but there is a special ]|rize of £20 for the leader. f Other scores are as follow: — OH Course.—Xorman Sutton, 71; R. French. L. Xunnerley. A. Castanon I Argentine), 72; John Baillieu (Australia), 73. New Course.—W. Hastings, 71; J. Bulla, S. Fields, S. Easterbrook, M. Pose (Argentine), R. A. Whitcombtf' (last vear's winner), J. McLean, C. Knight, W. Cox, 72. The Xew Zealand entrant, D. C. Collins, of Wellington, took 78.
