REFUGEES IN AUSTRALIA.
During the first two months of 1030 the Commonwealth Government issued landing permits to 1755 alien refugees. There were lttfio Germans, 104 Czech* and 51 persons possessing no national status. Of there. 904 have already landed in Australia, bringing with them a total cash capital of £04..'550. The total capital to he brought to Australia by the holders of all the permits issued *>o far is estimated at £474.075, an average of £270 a head. Of the 004 refugees already admitted, 622 are wane-earners, the remainder being wives and children (say«j the Canberra correspondent of "The Time*"'). About half the breadwinner.-* are skilled artisans or agricultural workers?. Permits are granted primarily to refugees with either i-peciai knowledge likely to increase the efficiency of Australian industries or skill in industries not yet established in Australia. Mechanic.-, oxy-acetylene blowlamp welders, joiners, cabinetmakers and upholsterer* are the majority of the skilled art ; --ans, and there are about 150 .farm workers. Eighty-five professional men and women have been admitted, chiefly engineers and industrial chemists. About SO trained domestics and more than 100 skilled textile vi.'kcr- and manufacturers of textiles not yet nrodnccd i:i Ain-tralia are among the rest of the refugees.
