BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the. Birkenhead Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. F. J. Osborne, presided. Water Conference. —The Water Board advised that the Department of Internal Affairs has requested the North Shore conference be held on July 12. Rates Struck. —Rates totalling 1/1% in the pound were struck for the current year. This is made up of a consolidated rate of 9%d on the unimproved value over •the whole borough, and a drainage rate of 4d in the pound, applying to the special sewerage area. Physical i itness Committee.—The council nominated Councillors N. R. Stewart and J. McDonald zz members of the physical fitness committee. Urban Rating Act. —One application was received for the reduction of rates under the above Act and it wa« referred to a committee to investigate. Traffic Report.—The traffic officer reported that notices had been issued for the irregular parking df cars at the wharf and that in the future prosecutions would be made. Works Committee.—The works committee recommended the footpath of Harbour View Road be cut down to a permanent level and laid in concrete. They also recommended that portion of the' j footpath on either side of Waratah Road be laid in concrete. -
