SETBACK FOR SPINSTERS.
A campaign lias for long been waged in England in support of pensions for apinstere at the age of 55, and. a year the Government agreed to nppoint a committee to inquire into tlie fom]>laints concerning the position nf unmarried -women under the Contributory Pensions Act. The committee's report, issued last month, flops not support the spinsters' claim. The statement that it would cost only £4.400.000 to provide pensions at 55 is accepted by the committee, but they point out t hat the consequential extension of this privilege to other clashes would bring the bill up to £14.000.000. Among (Midi other classes who could properly demand equally considerate treatment would be the widows of uninsured men and the deserted wife impporting herself by her own exertions. The relatively low cost of providing pensions for spinsters at the age of 55 Is a reminder that marriage is the chief occupation of women.
