WORKERS' FLATS.
FINE SYDNEY BLOCK. ARCHITECT'S COMMENTS. DESIGNED VIENNA BUILDINGS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SVDXEY. May 30. The now workers' flats built by the State Government at Erskinevillc. a poor "class suburb just outride the city. are incomparably better than the famous Karl M.nx workers' flat* in Vienna, according , to the architect of the Vienna block*, Dr. Karl La Hirer, who has settled in Sydney. He said the most striking difference between them wae in their appearance. The flats ]in<l imposing towers and huge a relies over every entrance, and facades finished in plaster in different colours, but inside they were very small and furnished only with one tstove. There were only live (to every 200 flats, the Eirikineville flats, on the othtfr hand, though plain brick building*, were roomy inside and well equipped with stove*, fire- 1 , sinks, cupboards, bathrooms am! linoleum. Dr. Langer saw with pleasure children at play in the recreation ground beside the Krskineville flat* where tennis and basketball courts are available close by. Hβ explained that the need for quick construction and low rents in Vienna war; one reason why better Hats had not lw>on built. "There were 20.000 people homeless and starving in Vienna.'' he said. "We built 7<>.(ino Hat* in four years, and let each one at only the equivalent of S/ a. week. After all your ({overnment Inns built only ."><> flats and the rental is 10/.'" The Socialist (iovernnient in Vienna, he added, alrio built into each block of flats a kindergarten and medical and dental surgeries.
