HIGH IN CHRISTCHURCH.

WITHIN QUARTER INCH OF RECORD. (By Tslegraph.—Press A»soel»tlon.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Barometers in the city were higher than normal this morning, climbing to within .21."iin of the record established in ir»o3, when at 9.30 a.m. on October 20 the official reading at the Magnetic Observatory was 30.885 in. This morning the leading at the Wigram meteorological station was 30.670 inches, or 1038.7 millibars, at 8.30 a.m., this being the highest reading einee August 14, 1»37. when the barometer rose to 30.702 in at the Magnetic Observatory in the citv. The figure was 30.651 in at 9 o'clock and it was the same two hours later, when jit began to fall slightly. The lowest [reading ever registered" in Canterbury j was 28.387 in, on the morning of January 1 16 oi this year during a strong north- ' west gale.
