SUITABLE SONG SOUGHT.

AUCKLAND COMPETITION

In order to have a suitable song -which can be sung at large gatherings and official functions in connection mrith the centennial celebrations next year, the Auckland Centennial Council has announced the conditions for an Auckland centennial song competition. On the recommendation of the National Centennial Council, the Government has adopted "God Defend New Zealand." by Thomas Bracken, as New Zealand's national song. A prize of £25 has been given anonymously by an Auckland lady. The chairman of the fine arte' committee, Mr. J. S. Stewart, said that the conditions called for a unison song for massed voices, and the theme -would have to relate in some respecte to the national life of New Zealand. Competitors would have to be of British nationality. there would be no entrance fee. and the copyright of the work would be reserved to the successful competitor. Judges would be appointed by the committee and their decision would be final. Organising Work. The Metropolitan Centennial Executive has decided to invite applications for the position of celebrations organiser, the appointment to be for one year from June 1 next, at a salary of £400 a year. The work will be to co-ordinate the activities of the sub-committees and present a working scheme to embrace each sectional activity. <
