BOXER GAOLED.

INTOXICATED IN CAR.

INVOLVED IN COLLISION

"ABUSIVE AND GARRULOUS."

Well known as a professional boxer, Archilmld Hughes, aged 35, was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour by Mr. C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.. in the Police Court this morning for being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in' Asquitli Avenue last evening.

_ Senior Sergeant La 1 well said that at 7.•>•">. when a Mr. Cox wax driving along Acquith Avenue, he saw another car approaching at "a fair speed." When 20 yards away, Hughes apparently Iwcame confused, his car veering over and colliding with Mr. Cox's car. The force of the impact was such that it swung Hughes' car right around, the car being extensively damaged. The police were then sent for.

"Hughes was inclined to be abusive and garrulous," added Mr. Calwell, "and there was no doubt al«>ut liim being under the influence of liquor. However, this is the first time he has ever been in court."

Ap|>earing for accused, Mr. Allan Moody said Hughes, who was a lightweight boxer, was widely known as a clean-living, decent citizen. He followed the occupation of a waterside worker. Yesterday he had more liquor than was good for him, and this, no doubt, impaired his judgment slightly. Hughes had not been in any way pugnacious. and had not been looking for trouble.

Counsel asked that Hughes might be shown whatever leniency was possible, and if a fine could not he imposed in view of the fact that a collision had occurred, then he asked that any sentence should he a short one.

Hughes was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment and his license was cancelled. the- magistrate directing that no other should be issued to him for two vears.
