Tlie Marist forwards played so well in tin- match against Mount Albert that the leaders in the championship were five points down at half-way. Hut tlie second half was marked by a his Mount Albert recovery and in the end they won by a ma ruin of seven points. They scored four tries and H. Donaldson converted all. "wincr to injury, Mount Albert were without two of their best forwards in Sllilillx.il and Cameron with a result that their forwards were never as impressive as in the previous match. when Manukau were defeated. All through the first half the Marist team play was superior, hut it was not kept up for the full run of Hie Same.

MrT.achlnn again played n splendid game at full-hack for Mount Albert. Hardgrnve was good on the wing, despite the fact that the hall rarely came to him in the way that it should. Donaldson, witli smooth, even play and good judgment, was the outstanding inside back.

Tristram. Gunning and T/eatherbarrow were the pick of the Mount Albert forwards. Haslam's all-round play and great defence meant a lot to Marist. Donovan gave an exceptionally good exhibition in the five-eighth line and ({lover played his usual very sound game at full-back.. The Mil Hut forward play was very even and consistent, with Anderson brilliant in the open play. although there were a couple of occasions when he erred in not sending the Dm 11 ou when the support was up in position. Through injury to Breed, who was show ing up well nt the time, it was necessary to put the lightweight -Murdoch in the scrum, which was n new experience lor the well-known five-eighth. As a match it was a game of two parts. Marist ascendancy for sonic of the way and then a definite swing in the other direction. For Mount Albert tries were scored by Gunning, Mclnnarney, Donaldson and Pinches. Donaldson converted all the tries. For Marist tries were scored by Halsey, Flnlayson and I.ogan. Anderson converting one and also kicking a penalty goal. ■ I MANUKAU DISAPPOINT. I'ntil the Manukau backs can combine, there is little hope of the team reaching its high plane of other seasons. Tb»y tried another rearrangement on Saturday, but neither surety nor rhythm resulted, and a better balanced Richmond team finished up 10 points nhead on the count. A team that has in its back division players of the calibre of Nepia, Chase, Hemi and Walter Brlmble should be capable of better things And perhaps the improved standard will come later. Some of Nepia's defensive play on Saturday recalled displays by the great player In his younger years, but in general ne played only a «ound club game. T. Chase, whose lively side-step is off his left foot, was correctly positioned at left wing threequarter, but Pana.pa. who came to Auckland from North Auckland as a scrum half, could not blen4 the play at five-eighth. There were some outstanding forwards in the match, Devine for Richmond and Brodrick for Manukau being outstanding in loose play, a pair that should be well in the running when the representative team Is chosen. Mitchell and McLeod. of Richmond, were another good pair on the day. while in the light work Ririnul and Marsh, the Manukau henv.v-welgb.ts, strove hard. The inclusion of Graham in the Richmond inside backs gave an incisive touch to the play. Graham's display was not without blemish, but his swift side-step. burst of speed and ability were decidedly impressive, and his partnership with Blckerton brought strength to the Richmond attack. Other features of the Richmond back piny were long, well-directed passing by Watklns, glorious defence bv Tittleton. speed and dash by Mills in a very Aright display on the wing, and sure fielding and good positional play by Brnmley at full-hack Mitchell nmi Bieiterton scored tries for Richmond, J*»vine converting both. Gcal-c scored a try for Manukau and Hemi kicked a penalty goal. SMITH'S GOAL TALLY. Though Newton went well in the opening stages of tbeir game at Devonport against the Shore side, winning a majority of the scrums, their dash left them about halfway through, when their star forward, Blacklaws. went off with broken ribs. The Shore full-back. J. Smith, kicked 10 points, the final score being 19 —12 to the home team. Shore played a solid game, and Jones was the best forward on the field. The Maori Hapeta was also In the limelight nt times. At full-back Smith was, as usual, sound. On the other side Dempsey played equally as well as Smith, and kicked several fine goals. Kendall had few chnnces, tout when he did get the bnll nlwnys looked dangerous. Ulnders was perhaps their best forward. For Shore tries were scored by Joiffcs. 'Sterling and Morgan, Smith getting the rest with two penalties and three conversions. Newton's points came from tries by Stephens and McKenzie. while Dempsey kicked two penalties and -converted' a try.

STERN RESISTANCE. Stern resistance to the Ponsonbv com-' lunation was put up by Papakura on No. - ground, and for a good proportion of the game they held their own. However, the ■superior combination of Ponsonfov told in the long run, and they ran out victors bv !•» points to 4. Ponsonby took a long time to settle down, and they appeared to miss he services of their centre, Kay. There was life and vigour in the PapaKura. pack, although two of their best forwards in Herkt tnd Evans, were absent, and for ward the losers more than held their own. Their backs, as usual, lacked nip and pace. Wright, their full-back, played xoundly, while Cooke, who usually plays in this position, gave steadiness to the backs in the five-eighth line. He showed line appreciation of positional play, and his defence was invaluable to his side at times. Milliken was Ihe pick of the forwards, and played, perhaps, his l>est game to date, while good supimrt came from Wells, Cossey and Kogarty. The pick of the Ponsonby forwards were Petersen and Morgan, who were consistently on tlie ball. Dormer gave n good account of himself behind the pack until he was forced to retire injured, but tho tiveeightihs. Young and Simpson, did not make the most of the opportunities thus presented to them until late in the game. Riley at centre was not as impressive as usual, but Campbell and McManus were not seen in as favourable a light as they would otherwise have been. Por Ponsonby tries were scored by Middleton C-) and Petersen, while Nurse converted all three tnies. Papakura's points cume from penalty kicks by Mclnnes. GRADE RESULTS. Si: Molt KKSKRVB.
