Marshal Chiang Kai-shek has ordered the evacuation of the capital, Chunking, by all except able-bodied men. Diplomats and foreigners have be»i granted residence permits for six months. ✓ Further details of last week's bombing show that the death-roll far exceeds 4000. Hundreds of bodies were discovered in a sin«le exit from dug-outs, in which they were suffocated and were burned. Japanese to-day rebombed Foochow and Ningpo. A hundred houses were blown up.

Chinese guerillas are continuing their pressure on Canton. They are reported to have raided the aerodrome and destroyed 'planes. A hundred Chinese irregulars penetrated the heart of Canton and bayoneted three guards of the Japanese owned bank at Taiwan, forced the safe and removed the equivalent of £26,000 in Chinese notes and silver. Men and women irregulars entered Sunwui and killed 200 Japanese. The Japanese are reported to be preparing to annihilate four Chinese divi- . sions, totalling 150,000 men, north-west iof Hankow, which is subject to continual assaults from all sides.
