SCHEME 13 MEN.

WORK AT MOUNT ALBERT. 'UNDERSTANDING NEEDED. Work carried out under scheme 13 was discussed at a meeting of the Mount j Albert Borough Council last evening, ! when a letter wae received from the Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb,' stating that it was not possible to promise an extension of subsidy in respect of loan works beyond the end of July next, when it would be necessary ' to review the position in the light of the number of men requiring employment at that date. • * , The work* committee, in a report, recommended that the engineer should notify scheme 13 men of the Minister's advice and point out that any man ordered to report back to the Labour Department had the right of appeal to the Department but not to the council. The Mayor, Mr. H. A. Anderson, said that the matter had given the committee j a lot of concern. The scheme had been! prolonged and it now seemed that it j would be continued to July 31. He believed that the scheme would have to I go on for a while, and it was their duty to have a complete understanding with the men employed under scheme 13. In ! some eases men were not "pulling their ! weight," although they were getting ' standard wages. Men physically unfit! were in a different category and the remarks did not apply to them. The committee's report was adopted.
