Protection For Visitors To World's Fair. 10,000 PAN-HANDLERS. Independent Cable Service. (Beceived 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 8. City authorities, determined to protect visitors to the World's Fair from victimisation, have launched a drive against the begging racket in New York, which, it is estimated, has an annual "take" of 15,000,000 dollars. It is believed that more than 10,000 pan-handlers are now operating in New. York.

Heavy Enlistment Reported In Britain. 1,000,000 IN 12 WEEKS. (Beceived 10 a.m.) LONDON, May 8. Addressing the Rotarians' Congress, Dr. Leslie Burgin, Minister of Supply, said that in 12 weeks 1,000,000 citizens had applied for national service, and there had been 600,000 definite enrolments in the first fortnight. He appealed to employers to place no obstacle in the way of young people filling gaps in the Territorials.
