PAYMENTS TO GROWERS. government decision. The Government luifl decided that the average overall . price to bo paid to tobacco growers for the 1939 crop will 1h» 1/1 OA per lb for flue cured leaf, and 1/7h per lb for air-dried. A statement to this effect was made to-day by tlis Minister of Industries and Commerce, tlia Hon. D. (J. Sullivan, who is chairman of the Tobacco Board. The Minister Raid tlie manufacturers were being asked to open tlieir buying for the season, which commences on Monday morning on the baeis announced. Later the position would be reviewed, when manufacturers would receive a payment to compensate them for the difference between the prices they were able to pay on a commercial basis and those determined by the Government. The commercial basis was stated to be 1/8 and 1/5 per lb.
