SOMERVILLE'S STRONG BID.

The game between those old rivals St. Luke's and Soinerville, provided a dour struggle in which the winner's strong defence proved the deciding factor. Although both tennis had one. or two new players and it was some little time before they settled down, the positional play of St. Luke's brought its reward when they scored the only two goals of the match. Sell and Cullam, newcomers to the forward line, shaped very well, and with Carroll always well to the fore and ready to snap up chances, these three headed many of the attacks. Corin was tried at left half, and while, at times be was inclined to dally too long before passing, his positional play stemmed many onslaughts and he fed Ills vanguard judiciously. King and Clark, the two full-backs, formed an almost impenetrable barrier, the latter clearing well with strong well directed hits. Somcrville lacked a leader, for at times the majority of the players seemed to have lost all sense of their positions. Marshall, th» custodian, took some reckless chances which, fortunately, came otT. The reappearance of the veteran, C. Smith, added stability to the rearguard, but it was evident that he is slowing up in his movements. Burt took the half-line honours,

again showing that he thrives on hard work, bnt a little more attention to positional play would save him much energy in attempting to make recoveries. Wyatt plavcd a steady game in the. forwards and combined well with Elliott and Watts. The latter might do well to endeavour to open up the game more by drawing the defence than passing to his lnsidos for them to finish off the movement.
