Enthusiastic Secretary. When Grafton met and defeated Technical Old Boys in the first game of the season at Eden Park on Saturday last, the occasion proved the first in sixteen years that Mr. Tom McConnell, genial secretary of the Grafton Club, had missed a game in which the Grafton senior team. wae engaged. Mr. McConnell hae been suffering from a severe attack of gastric influenza, but he is very hopeful of seeing his team's clash with Mariet Old Boys on Saturday. Polo ReviVal. Polo has caught the enthusiasm of Aucklanders in the past summer. Until a few- months ago the game had not been played here since pre-war days, but now there are 11 teams affiliated to the new Auckland Polo Club. The field day at Otahuhu last Saturday showed how players had progressed in the short time since the revival; for, in spite of cold, driving rain, a crowd of close on 1000 paid to see the best exhibition of polo ever seen in Auckland. The four teams from Waikato, including men like the Peakes, Aliens and Klaus (all born to the saddle and mounted on horses bred from some of the best racing stock in the country) gave a wonderful exposition of the eport in these bad conditions. Though hardly up to the same standard the local teams played and rode hard, hit cleanly arid combined well. After four exciting chukkare the challenge match between Drury (holders) and Papatoetoe for the Hull Kinloch Cup resulted in a draw, leaving Drury the holders till next season.

American Basketball. Considerable progress will be made this| year, it is hoped, with the inauguration of another winter eport—men's basketball, played under American rules. The game was introduced here two years ago when a league was formed to arrange matches between interested clubs. This year indications point to a successful eeaeon and to cope with the increasing demand for playing area the Auckland Men's Basketball Association has made arrangements to hire the Pons, onby Drill Hall on alternate Veteran With Gun. T. Elliott, of Waitakaruru, one of the oldest members of the Morrinsville Gun Club, scored a popular win on Saturday, when he broke 26 clays to secure the first prize in the trophy shoot that was the final event on the club's programme for the day. Seven men tied for first place, and in the shoot-off Elliott, who is over 50 years of age, won from W. I». Brinkworth, of Hamilton, at the twelfth bird. The trophies were presented by the club president, Mr. W. J. Aitken, who congratulated Mr. Elliott on holding hia own with the younger shooters. Novel Awards at Paeroa. At the annual prize-giving of the Paeroa Athletic Club, in addition to trophies for the usual running and field events, awards were made to K. Cridge for pluck in finishing in every event in which he started; and to J. Verran and K. R. Mcleaacß for their contributions to sport in Paeroa.
