SCHEME ABANDONED.
HOUSING PROPOSALS.
RACECOURSE PROPERTY.
That the high development cost attached to building on the Auckland Racing Club's property at Mangere Crossing was the real reason for the Ministry of Housing abandoning further consideration of acquiring the property for building State houses was revealed in a letter from the Department read at the Otahuhu Borough Council last evening.
The letter stated that the cost per unit section averaged £186, in addition to which the Department would be called upon to pay an annual contribution of about £175 on a drainage echeme. The letter added that more than 100 eections had been purchased in the borough'at an average development cost of less than £100, the highest being £157. Unless the council could submit proposals whereby considerable reductions in regard to costs could be effected it would serve no good purpose in discussing the matter further.
The Mayor agreed with the latter part of the letter and was satisfied that the purchasing of local sections would be the means of building up-tke borough.
