LOCAL BODIES.

OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council took place last evening, the .Mayor, Mr. C. K. Petiic, M.P., piesiding. Street Collection. — Permission was granted to the St. John Ambulance Association to hold a street collection day provided the local branch received -o per cent, of the gross takings. Street Cleaning.—The Rev. Pi. J. Stanton drew the; council's attention to the untidy btate of. the main street, and advocated a spirit of local pride. The letter was enthusiastically received, and the mailer was referred to the works' committee and the Business Men's Association.

. Sub-division Plan. —With a view to securing the council's approval a plan was submitted by the Holy Trinity Trust Board showing proposed sub-divisions for building sites and a rpst room adjacent to the Holy Trinity Church in Mason Avenue. The plan was approved.

Museum Contribution. —A letter from the Auckland Institute and War Memorial Museum stated that Otahuhu's contribution to the maintenance of the museum tor the year ending 1940 will be £130 14, 4. This represents a,u increase of £3.

Xo. 13 Scheme.—A letter from the Labour Department agreed with the council's continuation of labour under scheme 13 in cases where work approved lias not been completed by the end of the present month.

Public Library.—Dealing with an application from the Otahuhu Public Library regarding a subsidy, the matter was deferred until a balance-sheet was presented to the council.

Dressing Shed.—The borough engineer presented a plan detailing design and capacity for a dressing shed in Sturges Park. The approximate cost will be £500. excluding cost of plumbing and drainage. Approval to vote £41)0 was agreed to by the council, in addition to which £80 was in hand derived from voluntary efforts. The Mayor was of the opinion that the erection of lockers and other amenities could be obtained with the assistance of the various sports bodies of the district.

Street Meetings.—A special sub-com-mittee appointed to consider the question of street meetings by religious bodies, presented its report, which was keenly debated. With a view of safeguarding the interests of the business section of the town and the increasing demand for parking spa.ee in the side streets, especially on Friday nifrhts. the committee recommended (a) that there should not be any increase in the number of permits granted; (b) should the council feel disposed to grant additional permits, then the privilege should be granted for some night other than Friday night: («1 should ■the council asn-ee to a further allocation for Friday night, it is suggested that some equitable system of rotation be adopted.

Football Clubs.—A proposal that the Rugby Football Club be grauted the use of Sturges Park on Tuesday and Thursday nights lor practice was agreed to after an amendment that the League code could have those nights. Wednesday night was allotted to the League Club. The Mayor refuted, and the council supported him that the council was not biased one way or the other. There are approximately 180 Rugby players, against 90 to 100 belonging to the League. It was decided to charge 12/6 per night instead, of 7/1> as previously. NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The Mayor, Mr. A. T. Eeiman, presided over the fortnightly meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council last evening.

Street Collections.—The Community Sunshine Association asked for a donation aitd"£l"l/ was granted. The application by the association to have their - permit for a. street collection transferred from May 215 to June 30 was granted. Permission was also granted the St. John Ambulance Association lor a street collection on October 27, 1039.

Housing Scheme.—The Director of Housing Construction advised that the laud in Titirangi Road and Willerton Avenue offered by the council was not thought suitable for use in the housing scheme at the present time.

Workers' Tickets. —The secretary No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority advised that the Auckland Bus Company was granted authority in August, 1937, to cancel their apprentice tickets because no objection was raised at the meeting. The secretary advised that the matter of the use of workers' tickets on public holidays and transfer tickets was being taken up with the company.

Smoke and Fumes.—The Medical Officer of Health advised that after inspecting Crum's Brick Works he had submitted suggestions to the company with a view to overcoming the cause of complaints made to the council and the Department by adjoining residents about smoke and fumes. The Medical Officer of Health asked the company to consider the provision of a flue and clampers to enable all fumes to be returned to and pass through the highest temperature kiln before discharging into the chimney stack and the construction of a fumes chamber in line with the existing flues. When the kilns were in nsp it would be essential to provide and maintain a powerful fire in the funies_ chamber capable of dealing with all the unconsumed particles which would otherwise escape into the outer air.

Roads and Footpaths.—A complaint about the condition of Astley Avenue road and footpath was referred to the works committee, who were instructed to inspect all asphalt roads and footpaths with a view to carrying out topdressing where required.

New Lynn Domain.—Tn reply to a letter froni the Mayor, the Hon. W. E. Parry, Minister of Internal Affairs, wrote stating that he had noticed in the Press that the New Lynn Domain, the construction of which was carried out by returned soldiers under Scheme 13, was now open for use. He considered the work a fine effort, and was sure it would be appreciated by the public. The question raised by his Worship about the scheme being allowetl to operate until the domain is completed will be brought to the notice of the Minister of Labour for his considera- | tion.

Engineer's Keport.—Tlic engineer reported that the work on Margan Avenue Was practically completed, and at an early date a start would be made on Reabrook Avenue. The engineer suggested that tlie council inspect Seabrook Avenue before the work was commenced, and it was agreed to do so.
