WEEK-END MISHAPS.

DUAL CYCLING TRAGEDY.

DROWNING IN NORTH. Five deaths occurred as result of road accidents during the week-end, while a Whangarei resident was drowned in the Wairoa River, and a woman died from injuries suffered in a motor accident near Waverley on Wednesday. No eerious mishaps occurred in Auckland.

A motor cycle accident which resulted in the death of a young man and a girl, and in which a motorist is alleged to have been implicated, occurred near Moegiel at about midnight on Saturday, saye a Press Association message from Dunedin. It was not discovered, however, until eight o'clock this morning. The victims were:— KILLED. Mr. Neil Harris, aged 24, of 136, Bay View Road, Dunedin. Miss Vera Thomson, aged 22, an employee of the Waikari Hospital. The accident occurred on Duke's Road, near Moegiel, the tragedy being discovered this morning when the bodies of the two victims were seen lying at the side of the road beside the motor cycle. It wae at first thought that the accident was caused through the motor cycle skidding. However, further investigations revealed that it could have been the result of a collision, in which a motorist might have been involved.

A large body of detectives, assisted by Chief Traffic Inspector McDowell and Inspector Sutherland, commenced a searching inquiry this morning. An arreet was made at a late hour to-night.

It is understood that Miss Thomson and Mr. Harris were engaged to be married.
