WORK SOUGHT.
BIG PARTY ARRIVES.
AUSTRALIAN TRADESMEN.
BETTER CONDITIONS HERE.
In search of work in New Zealand, forty-four men arrived by the Aorangi this morning from Sydney, the largest [<arty that has yet come to Auckland from Australia in search of employment.
The party included twelve carpenters, four of whom are under contract, but other trades and callings were generally represented, there -being labourers, painters, coal miners, clickers, turners, timber workers, electricians and one man \yhose occupation was. to break down and pickle metals.
The men said that work generally was of an intermittent nature in Australia, with spells, of unemployment, and reports of plenty of work offering in Xew Zealand with good conditions and wages was a. big lure. In many of the occupations in Australia a 44-hour week wa* worked, compared with a 40-hour week in Xew Zealand.
The men were met on board by the Placement Officer. Mr. J. R. Elsbury, who was able to give all information sought.
One of the visitors described it as real service, and said the fact that an official came on board.to meet them was much •appreciated. ,
Mr. Els-bury eaid that there should be no difficulty in placing skilled tradesmen, and the men engaged in the ibuilding occupation were particularly in demand. *
