AUTUMN RACING.

THE FIRST DAY.

ROUND UP WINS. SPRINT TO PIRATE KING. There wae some fine racing at Avondale on Saturday, -H-lien the Avondale Jockey Olnb cominienced its autumn meeting, the lui'ge majority of t/he events being won by narrow margins. Horsee carrying No. 1 saddle clotih did exceptionally well, for they won. lour races, and were in the money in the remaining events. The weather was fine and there was a laige attendance, the sum of £47,072 going through the win and place machines, compared with £34,403 10/ for the corresponding day last year, when the single pool eyetem of ibetting was in operation. Thitf wae an increase of £12,008 10/. Bound l*p put up a line performance to win the Foley Memorial, the chief tint event of the day. He was well back early, but had moved up by the time the straight wan readied, and over the last furlong galloped over the leaders to beat Gold Vau ln and Golden Sheila, who also came from well buck over the last half-mile. Kulettc, (ray Rebel, iJalinavar and Anion were next. The latter led till well into the utraiyht, but then faded out.

Wyndora, a half-sister to Croupier by Wlhil'lwind, registered her first success wilien whe accounted for the Oakley Handicap. .She drew So. 3 at the post, and was always one of the leaders, holding on to beat the favourite, Nora Gregor, by a neck, with Our Jean, who did not get thejjest of runs, only a head away. Heroic Maid, Surmise and La Vie were next. .Wyndora returned the 'best price of the day.

A Solid Effort. Pirate King was responsible for a solid effort in the Railway Handicap, tine chief ■print. Te Poto and Pahistre were first round the home turn from Lady Meath, Gay Seton, Silver Eagle and Pirate King, and finishing in great style Pirate King got the decision by a head from Gay Beton, wiho beat Lady Meath by half a (head. Palustre, Te Poto and Calorie were next.

Brazilian, who had followed Pocket Venue home twice at the recent, EHerslie meeting, wa# made favourite for the Whau Handicap, and he fully justified that position. Eastern Heir led along the back, and was attended into the straight by Trevace, Mia Fratollo, Master Appellant and Brazilian. In the inn home Brazilian proved juet a little too good for Eastern Heir, w'hom he beat by a long neck, with Trevace half a head away third. Saccone, Pocket Venus and Spinning Wheel followed.

There was another fine finish in the Titininpi Handicap, when Black Musk •beat the and' Jayola, narrowly. Very Glad and Inver were firet into line from Black Muek, Ivar and Jayola. Black Musk put in hie claim alt the distance, and stalling off Ivar won by a head, witih Jayola .half a length away. Then came Inver, Hi#h Sea and Ivy Willonyx. The winner returned double figures.
