TOP WEIGHT TRIUMPHS

GOLD VAALS JUST FAILS.

AIRAM MAKES HURDLE HISTORY.

AVQNDALE AND SOUTHERN RACING.

Less than half a length separated the first three horses in the Foley Memorial Handicap, main event at Avondale. and the winner. Round Up, carrying the big weight of 9.13, just won on the post from Gold Vaals, who was successful at Ellershe last Monday. It is a comparatively rare thing in New Zealand, or anywhere else for that matter, for a four-year-old to show repeatedly to advantage over hurdles. Just such a horse is Airam, a daughter of Brazen and Volume. She commenced the season at the Taranaki Jockey Club's meeting on December 26 by running a second in the Rahotu Hurdles, and, after following this up with a win on the second day, went on to run three seconds in succession. To-day she scored her third win for the season by taking the Avondale Hurdles when carrying the top weight of I 1.7, and she has only been out of a place on two occasions in 1 1 starts since August 1. Three race fixtures and one trotting meeting—the opening of the Manawatu Club's annual—were held in the Dominion to-day, and local interest was centred in the Avondale Jockey Club's races on its suburban course. The weather at Avondale was fine, the attendance large, and the track hard and fast.
