"Oscar's" Three Winners Have Had Him Before
THIS year's dire* winners of "Oscar," the annually-, awarded trophy of the Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood, have all won him previously. Frank Capra was awarded the-coveted prize for 1938's best production with "You Can't Take It With You"—not yet released in Auckland. Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis, who, like Capra, have carried off Oscar before, were awarded pride of place for their acting—Tracy in "Boys' Town" (also unreleased locally) and Miss. Davis in the controversial "Jezebel." The plaques were presented at the annual dinner of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the Biltmore Bowl, Hollywood, on February 25. Music—Best song: Ralph Rainger and Leo Robin for "Thanks for the Memory," in Paramount's "Big Broadcast of 1938." Best scoring: Alfred Newman for "Alexander's Ragtime Band," Twentieth Century-Fox. Best original musical score: Eric Wolfgang Korngold, for "The Adventures of Robin Hood."
Technical Awards:—Colour cinematography: A plaque to Oliver MaTsh and Allan Davey for their work in M.G.M. s "Sweethearts;" to Deanna Durbin and Mickey Rooriey; to Harry M. Warner, president of Warner Bros., in "recognition of patriotic service in the production of historical 'short subjects" (a scroll); to Walt Disney, for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (trophy);
for their work in "Spawn of the North," Paramount, to Gordon Jennings for special effects, Farciot Edouart for transparencies, and Loren Ryder for sound efforts (plaques); to J. Arthur Ball (recently resigned as vice-president of Technicolour) "for his outstanding contribution in the advancement of colour" (scroll). Scientific Awards.—No major awards. Honourable mention to John Aalberg and the R.K.O. Radio sound department for the application of compression to variable area recording. Honourable mention to Byron Haskin and the special effects department of Warner Brothers studio for pioneering the development of the triple head background projector.
