GIFT FROM ARAWAS.

SPECIMEN OF CARVING. FOR NEW LINER'S LOUNGE. On behalf of Mr. H. Tai Mitchell and the Arawa Maori tribe, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, yesterday afternoon presented to the commander of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company's liner Dominion Monarch, .Captain W. H. Hartman, a beautiful example of native carving in the form of an ash tray stand. Sir Ernest, who made the presentation at the official luncheon on board the liner, said the Arawas had sent it to the commander as a token of their friendship and esteem. Suitably inscribed, the stand would be placed in the ship's lounge, said Captain Hartman in acknowledging the gift.
