"LOSS TO THE DOMINION."

'An extremely serious loss to animal research work in the Dominion." was how. Professor E. R. Hudson, director of Canterbury Agricultural College, to-night described the appointment of Dr. M. C. Franklin, lecturer in chemistry and animal nutrition at the college, to the position of senior research officer in the division of animal health and nutrition of the Commonwealth of Australia ' Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. Dr. Franklin will iie engaged mainly on biochemical and nutritional investigations of sheep •>roblems and will be stationed at the McMaater Animal Health Laboratory, Sydney.

Professor Hudson claimed that Dr. Franklin was leaving New Zealand only iGcuuse there were not the facilities for

An overseas expert, Dr. •John Hammond, of Cambridge University, had recommended that Canterbury Agricultural College and Maasey 1 ollejre should play an important part in the animal "research programme needed in ~New Zealand, but, apparently, the work was being confined almost exclusively to the Department of Agriculture. He considered it nothing short of tragedy that Canterbury Agricultural College—and, under some circumstances the same thing applied to Massey College —whs not being developed as a centre of animal research.
