MANUREWA COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Manurewa Borough Council was held la«t evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. J. Ferguson, pre* y siding. ' Foreman's Report.—The foreman, Mr. F. Sainty, reported that 45 men were engaged under Scheme 13 special. A further two floodlights had been installed at Jellicoe Park. The Papakura meter reading showed that 478,000 gallons had passed through the meter for February. Five new connections had been installed. Deputation to Minister.—The Mayor . reported on the deputation of local bodies that waited on the Minister of Public Works at Pukekohe in connection with the proposed new stock route, Mr. Semple assured the deputation that this work won id be carried out in due course. State Housing.—ln reply to a letter from the council the Minister of Housing advised that as they had been unable t« secure tenders for over 300 houses in recent months there was not any immediate likelihood of Manurewa going on the list.
Enlarging Croquet Lawns. —The Labour Department advised that permission bad been granted for the subsidy to employ men under 13 Special Scheme in enlarging the lawns of the local croquet club. Resident Xurse.—A letter was received from the Loval Manurewa Lodge M.U.1.0.0.F., pointing out that Manurewa would shortly be without the services of a resident nurse, and asking the council to use its best endeavours to have one subsidised by the Hospital Board. It was decided to apply for a subsidy. Authority for Local Bodies. —The council's delegates to the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association were instructed to support to a certain decree the resolution to be submitted by the Onehunga Borough Council at the association's next meeting, asking that legislation be passed giving local authorities power to nw'ire owners of houses to effect such repairs as may he required to make thcin reason-.-.i.iy h ilntable.
