MAORI'S CRIME.
YOUNG GIRL ASSAULTED.
FIVE YEARS' HARD LABOUR.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) GISBORNE, Monday. 'I have seriously considered ordering a flogging in your case," said Mr. Jus" tice Northcroft in the Supreme Court this morning, when Joe Douglas, a Maori, appeared for sentence for rape and indecent assault on a 12-year-old girl at Wairoa on December 3. "The crime you have been found guilty of is an abominable one and is abominated equally by Europeans and Maoris," continued his Honor. "You have previously been convicted and sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment for a similar offence and it appears to have had no effect. On your own application you were tried by a jury consisting of members of your own race, and were found guilty. "You will be sentenced to five years' imprisonment with hard labour."
