IMMIGRATION—WHEN?
What its the Government's unequivocal and official attitude towards • a resumption of immigration? The Speaker of the House, the Hon. W. E. Barnard, M.P., expressed himself as long ago as February, 1937, in favour of it, and has repeated the same views since.- Now the Hon. R. Semple has stated that there is room in the Dominion for 10,000,006 people. Presumably. Mr. Semple is in favour at least of the principle of immigration. These are two leadingmembers of the Labour party who must surely know the view of the Government on the matter, and yet not one word has been said publicly of exactly what the Government intends. tChe f Prime Minister has " beaten about the bush," but will not be pinned down. His last Statement, made last month, was that Cabinet had not yet considered it. Now that that great enemy to any scheme of immigration, public apstthy and even hostility,-bids-fair to being overcome, it is Tune;the Government saicf plainly what it .proposes. .-. :! ,. :: ., ■'.„,..'. ... i
