COMEDY AND COLOUR.
NEW ITALIAN BALLET. "SCUOLA DI BALLO." What "The Barber of Seville" is to grand opera, "Scuola di Ballo" is to ballet. Produced in Auckland last night for the first time by the Covent Garden Russian Ballet Company, "Scuola di Ballo" provides a wealth of comedy in mime. A less-known production, danced by the company's junior members, "Scuola di Ballo" has sprightly music and a range of steps that seems extraordinarily comprehensive—covering a whole series of solo and other arrangements. "Scuola di Ballo" was adapted from an Italian comedy by Leonide Massine to Boccherini's music.
Judging from their multiple curtain calls, real fame has been accorded by Aucklanders to Anton Dolin and Irina Baronova, who danced "The Swan Lake." Great appreciation was also shown for the contrasting "Cinderella." with its wealth of colour. In this, Titiana Riabouchinska ("Tania") repeated her title-role success, while not the least popular dancer was the Cat (Raissa Kouznetsova).
The programme will be repeated to-night. To-morrow afternoon and evening "The Swan Lake." "Cinderella" and "Aurora's Wedding" will be presented.
