PROMPTLY PUT OUT.
FIRE IN CITY BUILDING.
AUTOMATIC ALARM EFFECTIVE,
An outbreak of fire which might well have become a disastrous blaze occurred in a "top-floor room of the five-storey of John Court. Ltd., at the corner of Victoria Street East and Lome Street, last evening. The efficiency of the automatic alarm system and prompt work by men from the Central Fire Station resulted in the damage being confined to the interior of one room and to the roof.
The fire had a strong hold when the brigade arrived, but it was quickly suppressed,' and stocks, and machinery were saved from damage. Two engines and a salvage truck frere on the scene of the outbreak before the employees in the staff tearoom on the first floor were aware of it. Large crowds of Friday night shoppers quickly gathered, and traffic in Queen and Victoria Streets was temporarily delayed.
Two other alarms were received during the evening. One engine from the Central Station and one from Mount Eden answered a call to the corner of Mount Eden Road and Xormanbv Road, but the alarm proved to be faW. A small outbreak in the front room of a private residence in Bank Street was extinguished with first-aid apparatus. Portion of the contents of the room was •slightly damaged.
