IMPORTS.
EFFECT OF LICENSE SYSTEM. - {To the Editor.) A resume of a conversation between two working men,, as' overheard in thd street > recently, shows that even tlie -working man is beginning to think at last: "Imports this,.. year, say, 55 million pounds in ordinary c ir- . cumstanccs. Cut 8 millions for surplus imports j last year, 10 million to raise reserve fund up. so as to raise loan next Christmas, 15 million . for Public Works, local bodies and power' boards, 12 million for benzine and motor cars, rest' of us 10 million." I would suggest that you give an estimate of what will be required this year to cover imports, taking into full consideration necessary requirements, or what.. is likely to be deemed necessary requirements, ' for the Government and local authorities,;■■ Perhaps our Government, as it did not know. until a month or so ago where the funds obtained by exports went to, has not thought of making'an unaljvsis.'of what imports willbe required in its own .work?, for motor car*" -. and benzine and how little will be left for . the refit of the community, after allowance 'is made for decreased exports.
