CYCLED ROUND THE WORLD
A 26-year-old Wigan (Lancashire) grocer , * assistant named Allan Pendlebury has cycled round the world on a home-made machine in two years and a half. Pendlebury, who has worn through 12 tyres and covered 26,000 j mile* in 28 countries, learned only three word* of the languages of the countries through which he passed. The three words he learned in every language to eee him through were food, water, sleep. Once he wae pounced upon by bandits in a Persian canyon. He says: "I waited until one of them wa* away tending the homes. Then I gave one of the others a rabbit punch on the neck, emacked a third man under the jaw as he grabbed hie gun, and pedalled off for dear life."
