UNDERGROUND FIRE.
IN INDUSTRIAL. SUBURB. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, February 2. An underground fire ia burning in the heart of the industrial suburb of Botany, but although it is burning underground, it ie quite close to the surface, which is a dangerous area. Many years ago the area was a swamp, but ae it became drained and built upon peat formed, and it is this peat, a field of about 20 acres, which is now on fire. Firemen have poured thousands of ■gallons of water on it and the Botany council has endeavoured to smother it with sand, but it still burns on. Several people, walking on what they thought solid ground, have suddenly found their ankles sink into hot ashes which have blietered their feet.
