PLUNKET SHIELD.

STATISTICS OF THE SERIES. Canterbury Batsman Tops 300 —Sale Consistent —Most Wickets to Vivian. Auckland's innings victory over Wellington, and • win for Canterbury by five wicket, after being 64 runs behind Otago on the first innings, made the Plunket Shield point* for this season: Auckland 20, Canterbury Iβ and Wellington 8. Otago failed to •core I Although W. N. Carson made a century in his only innings, pride of place in the batting averages really goes to V. S. Sale, whose consistency at Carisbrook clearly saved Auckland from defeat in the Otago match. Most runs were scored by the Canterbury player R. E. J. Menzies. and after his 318 the young Wellingtonians W. G. Rainbird and J. A. Ongley followed with 280 and 245. Others to exceed 200 were the Canterbury skipper, J. L. Kerr, W. M. Wallace (Auckland) and I. B. Cromb (Canterbury). The two greatest failures were the former Otago leader, K. F. M. Uttley (whose centuries in both innings against Auckland at Eden Park last year earned him the Redpath Cup), and the ex-Taranaki left-hander M. P. Donnelly, who was second in the batting averages to Wallace in Britain in 1937. Cromb has a fractional lead in the bowling averages over H. G. Vivian and T. L. Pritchard (Wellington), but they both to6k twice as many wickets as the South islander.
