AUCKLAND WIN.

CRICKET HONOURS. THE SHIELD RETAINED WELLINGTON BEATEN BY AN INNINGS AND 35 RUNS. Tlie Plunket Shield stays in Auckland. In 40 minutes this morning the remaining three wickets in Wellington s second innings fell and the visitors' aggregate for the two innings was 4.~>4 35 short of the task which the home side liacl set them in one innings. When the game was resumed this morning with the overhead conditions the best of the match, and the wicket I back to normal, Wellington wanted 70 runs to avoid an innings defeat. They failed by 35 runs, the last wicket, Rainbird's, falling at 21;>. In retaining the shield, which they won last year, Auckland defeated Canterbury bv five runs on the first innings, and Otago by seven wickets, their success to-day being the most decisive. The team was well led by A. J. Postles. and this is the third occasion in the four wins since the 1933-34 season that he has captained Auckland. On the other occasion, in the 1936-37 season, H. G. Vivian was the captain. Fourteen runs were added to the overnight score, when in Cowie s third over Galliclian was tempted to play a ball well on the off, and was caught by Vivian at second slip 194 —B—9.8 —9. Next over Cowie turned the tables on Pritchard, who had bowled him at the end of Auckland's innings, scattering the stumps. Fiftv-four runs were still wanted to avoid outright defeat when Ashenden, last man, came in. Rainbird, who was i shaping confidently, placed Cowie to the leg boundary and reached 50 with a

brace off tlie same bowler. Carson was then brought on in place of Cowie, and his first ball settled the match, Rainbird pushing it up to Cowie at mid-on. It was an excellent innings by Rainbird and he confirmed the good impression he made in his first knock. Scores:— AUCKLAND. First Innings 489 WELLINGTON. First Innings 239 Second Innings. E. W.
