DRIVERS AND LICENSES.
GENERAL MISCONCEPTION.
The question of the right of an unlicensed driver to operate a car provided a licensed driver is also in the car arose in the Dunedin Police Court a few days ago. The defendant testified that he had been informed on a previous occasion by a transport officer that he was within his right* in driving without a license because there had been a licensed driver in the car. It is unlikely that such an opinion had been given, and the presiding magistrate is reported to have referred to the general misconception on the point. A person who has previously held a license has no right to drive a motor vehicle without a license, even if every other occupant in the same car is a licensed driver. The exception to thi» rule is a learner, who must be accompanied by a licensed driver in the front seat. Tie holder of tiie license in that case is responsible for the car, and must consequently exercise every precaution and observe the rale* as if driving himMlf.
