FILMS FOR YEAR.

UNITED ARTISTS. "COWBOY AND LADY" FOR PLAZA. For twenty venrs United Artiste have fostered the independent production of outstanding motion pictures, and now. after that period, they are more firmly established than ever. No less than seven independent producers, recognised among the foremost in the industry, will be producing pictures during the coming season to supply the public with high quality productions. The producers now associated with United Artists are as follow: —Samuel Goldwyn, Alexander Korda-London Films, David 0. Selznick, Walter Wanger, Edward Small, Hal Roach and W. F. Keller. Twenty-six pictures are to be produced at ft total cost of 30.000,000 dollars. It is fitting that the first picture scheduled for the new year is to come from Samuel Goldwyn, who has just celebrated his twenty-lifth year of picture producing. The picture is "The Cowboy and the Lady," starring Gary Cooper and Morle Obcron, which commences screening at the Plaza Theatre to-morrow. Lanky Gary's portrayal of the cowpunclier is the highlight of the film, ami he gives a performance that will merit ranking with his very best. Got d as he is, however, lie does not overshadow Jliss Oberon. She, as may be imagined, is the lady in the case, and her exhibition will probably add to her reputation and popularity with Auckland moviegoers. Other Goldwyn pictures that will be seen this year are "The Daring Age," starring the renowned violinist Jaseha Heifetz, Adolphe Menjou, Sigrid Gurie and Joel McCrea. The story by I."A. R. Wvlie is a daring and dramatic one of to-day'* youth lost in a world of turmoil. Emily Bronte's beloved romance, "Wutliering Heights," with Merle Oberon, and an exciting adventure story, "The Last Frontier," with Gary Cooper, are other Goldwyn pictures that Hill lie seen during the year. Alexander Korda will produce six pictures, half of them in technicolour- They are: "Prison Without Bars," starring Korda's newest screen discovery, Corinne Luchaire; the A. E. W. Mason story, "Four Feathers," in technicolour, with Kalph Richardson; "The Thief of Bagdad," in technicolour, starring the fascinating Indian boy Sabu; "Over the Moon," in technicolour, with Merle Oberon, from an original story by Robert E. Sherwood; "The First and the Last," a John Galsworthy story, with Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier; and "Conquest of the Air." David O. Selznick is providing "The Young in Heart," with Janet Gaynor, Douglas Fairbanks, jun., Paulette Goddard, Roland Young and Billie Burke. Selznick is also making another, entitled "Made for Each Other," with Carole Lombard as the star. Walter Wanger is producing four pictures : "Trade Winds," with Frederic March and Joan Bennett; "Stage Coach," "Winter Carnival" and "The Illusionist." Edward Small, who was the producer of "The Count of Monte Cristo," is providing "The Man in the Iron Mask," "The Duke of West Point," "King of the Turf," "Soutfy of Pago Pago" and "Kit Carson, Avenger." It is also announced that Hal Roach will produce four pictures for release through United Artists during the year. They are "Topper Takes a Trip," "Captain Midnight," "Water Gipsies" and a Hardy and Langdon comedy. 'Important names stud the star list of Hal Roach productions. Frederic March, Constance Bennett, Margaret Sullavan, Virginia Bruce and Jean Arthur are some of tlrem. For the coming season United Artists will distribute a new series of beautiful short subjects in technicolour entitled •'World Windows." The first of the series is "The Eternal Fire," which is one of the short subjects supporting "fhe Cowboy and the Lady." The whole of the pictures mentioned will be released in the theatre® controlled throughout the Dominion by Messrs. Amalgamated Theatres, Ltd., under contract recently made with the distributors.
