The heavy breeze sent the spume flying and throughout the day thousands of spectators ashore and afloat were thrilled by the speed of all clashes of boats. The biggest thrills of the day were probably enjoyed by the crews of the smaller craft.

Capsizes occurred throughout the day and there were many ca«es of broken gear and sails. Excellent work iu assisting crows was done by the navy, by harbour board launches and by private launch owners. Fifteen capsizes iu all were reported amongst the open boat classes.
