"THE 71st annual volume of the 1 indispensable "Whitaker" records the anxious times when the peace of the world was threatened by an almost universal upheaval. The Czechoslovakian situation, the civil war in Spain, the Sino-Japanese struggle, and affairs at liorae and abroad are summarised in the chronicle of events, and other matters of current interest are treated ill special articles. .Among these are details of the Anglo-U.S.A.-Canadian trade treaties, world production, food imports, and of other subjects now prominently before the public. Other articles deal with television, gliding, stratosphere flight, fixed trusts, census of production, etc. The usual summaries arc given of scientific discoveries and inventions, art exhibitions and sales, literature, theatrical productions and films of the year. The standing portions of the book have been, rigidly revised and the various statistical tables dealing with Great Britain, India, the Dominions and Colonies, the United States, and foreign countries have been increased and include the latest available figures. Equally valuable in its field is the "South and East African Year Book and Guide." Its 45th issue contains more than 1100 pages of information for the business man, immigrant, tourist, sportsman, invalid and teacher and student. The index alone includes over 4000 place names,- and is practically a gazetcer. The publication deserves the attention of the New Zealand Publicity Department, for no one publication nearly as exhaustive as this is available for people abroad who want full and accurate information about New Zealand. The publishers are Sampson, Low, Marston and Co., of London.
