IRON ORE DEPOSITS.
SCATTERED POCKETS FOUND,
UXKCOXOMTC QUANTITIES.
(From Otu* Correspondent.)
LTA\ 0 TON, th is day.
I Doubts whether iron ore exists in Onckaka in deposits of sufficient bulk to allow economic working are becoming evident from test borings which ha\e been in progress for some time. Borings so far hijve failed, it is understood, to locate other than scattered pockets of ore. Tunnels will be driven shortly m the ..hope of finding deposits of economic quantities. Much work has been done in the formation of tracks into the area containing the deposits, which lie in the hills well back from the- old ironworks beside the TakakaCollingwofHl road.
In Xaknka, where tlie announcement of tlm Government's development iilun WHS received with enthusiasm, tlie fooling of optimism regarding the future of the, scheme is becoming" tinged with Cioulit. Mi uy residents are frankly pessimistic, and others nre stilt hopeful of it partial fulfilment of the original plan.
