Browne, right-hand and slow, came on at the terrace end and Whitelaw pulled him high for a brace, the ball falling safely. At the lunch adjournment, Auckland had scored 77 runs for the loss of three wickets, Whitelaw not out 33, Weir not out 1. The Afternoon Play. The attendance, which had been small in the morning, increased considerably in the .afternoon. Pr it chard and Gallicliau continued the Wellington attack and kept the batsmen quiet with accurate bowling. Weir opened out to drive Gallichan to the fencc, but hail to play the next ball twice to save the wicket. It was sheer defensive batting at this stage, until Wliitelaw broke a quiet spell with a three ofT Priteliard. The score crept along in singles, with a small section of spectators urging the batsmen to go for runs. When Weir was 14 he was dropped by Browne off Gallichan.
