For later in the day were .set down for decision the intermediate hoys'! doubles final and the intermediate girls' doubles final and the intermediate mixed doubles final. The finals of the 'boys' intermediate and junior singles and the girls' -junior singles -will he played to-morrow. W. T. Pountney and Miss M. Burns • won easily at li —3, o—3 against J. B. Smith in the semi-final of the boys' junior singles.. Burns kept the ball particularly low with good plaeings and drives to Smith's backhand. He played the attacking game and came to the net frequently to .volley well from. there. He also gave ri. good display of smashing work. r Smith was good in passing shots, and ; often found Bairns out of position, but , in general stroke play and courteraft | Burns was superior. He took s initiative and. with Smith on the defence, i ' forced him into errors. In the second set Smith staged a good recovery to [ lead Burns at 3—l, but Burns evened at . 3 all and, through careful play, ran out . to take set ami, match -at o—3. Pam Cooke On Top. Pain Cooke deserved her victory over : Miss X. Symes in the semi-linal of the intermediate girls' singles. She was sure of herself and went' in to .the net to profit time and again. Her only fault was that she was inclined to drive a little too hard. Miss Symes did not trouble to come up to the net, but concentrated on picking up all the backcourt stuff she received—and she did it capably. Her driving under Miss Cooke's backhand was particularly good. Miss Symes showed a tendency to undercut her drives —a weakness that was disappointing. Miss Cooke's smashing was excellent, and she had no trouble in taking the first set o—3. With a. lead of 4—l in the second set, Miss Cooke walked out to a win of o—2. Results were:— 1 ' BOYS' JUNIOR SINGLES. (Semi-final.) A. S. Burns beat J. B. Smith, 6—3, o—3. * • INTERMEDIATE GIRLS' SINGLES. Miss P. Cooke beat Miss X. Symes, fi—3, o—2.
