TELEPHONE SUBSCRIBERS.
MOUNTING- AUCKLAND TOTAL.
There was a net gain of 1067 telephone subscribers in the Auckland district last year, compared with an increase of IS4B in 1937. The total number of connections at December 31 last was 21,58 G. Compared with a total of about 8000 when the cliango was made from the manual to the automatic exchange system, these figures show clearly the increased use of the telephone during the last twenty years. There arc several small waiting lists in parts of the Auckland ' automatic district, particularly n t Avondale. A temporary sub-exchange is soon to come into operation at St.'Helicr's, where extra facilities arc badly needed, there being a big waiting list of intending subscribers injthe St. Helicr's, Mission Bay -nd Kohimarama districts. Full relief, --.never, cannot be given until further -ijles are laid in the area.. All existing cables are fully utilised.
