CHIPS FROM THE BATS OF THE SUBURBAN MEN.
Domain patrons were pleased to see F. "Wood come into 'his own on Saturday •with a. quarter 'of a century of runs that •largely., ensured Brixton's victory over 'Ponsonby. The form of the ex-Roskill player, wliodrove capably and slione in late cutting, recalled his display three years ago when-hie ! notched a hundred. Longville, contributing, ajbrisk 53, was for a period an inspiring, partner for Wood, and the pair sefc a merry pace for the fieldsmen. >' * G.veen Lane in the Lead. Green Lane have taken the lead in tllie city and suburban championship with the opening match-of the second round finished.' They have played'steadily and evenly to reach that position;, two. points above R.W who seem to 'be going well at the present time. Manukau and Dilwortli are next lower on the ladder, with Ponsonby and Brixton equal at the bottom. There is yet plenty of scope for surprise variations in the .competition. The leaders 'had to fight desperately for .■their'■ maximum victory over Manukau "at the week-end. At one stage it - looked as. (though the team would not register the 55 runs required. It was Robinson's tenacity that saved the situation. His 23 not out was commendable in the circumstances. . He was also applauded for a thrilling .catcflr at'square leg in Manukau's second-innings. It was a hard drive which he took chest high. Russell was responsible for a brilliant catch in the outfield.
Gibson and Furlonger,
Dilworth Old Boys deserve a pat on tlie 'back for a. fine stand for 227 against R.V. (301). In this, Trevor Gibson, who notched 118, played a conspicuous part. This left-liander was a veritable stylist with the bat for two and three-qiiarter hours. His on-driving and late glancing were good to watch and he gave no oliances. The recently-promoted Furlonger (39), gave him support at a worthwhile 6tage. Furlonger scored a century in the lower grade just before Christmas, and he certainly has batting ability.
