DONATION OF £50.
BUSH FIRE SUFFERERS. AUCKLAND UNION'S ACTION. The Auckland Timber Workers' Union has donated a sum of £50 to the proposed fund for the relief of Victorian timber workers and their families who suffered in the recent bush fires. It is anticipated that other unions throughout the Dominion will take similar action; and it is planned also to open subscription lists in order that members may make individual contributions. The secretary of the Auckland Union, Mr. F. Craig, said that the question of opening subscription lists and of assisting Victorian workers to come to New Zealand to positions would be discussed at a meeting of the timber workers' national organisation Christcliurcli on February 22, A few Victorian workers had already come to New Zealand independent of any assistance. Two. machinists had reached Auckland. One was seeking work in the Putaruru district, where he had' relatives, and the other had secured a position with a city •firm. These men had reported that the timber industry in Victoria would be held up for a considerable titue, as most of the bush areas had been burnt up. There was a shortage of buslnnen in j New Zealand at the present time, said Mr. Craig, and these were the men who would be' brought from Australia, should any scheme be devised for their aid. Millers and bush contractors had j . been circularised asking if they had vacancies for men, but there was no suggestion of displacing New Zealand buslnnen, who were recognised as beiii"among the best in the world. °
