IN TEN YEARS.

BOYS CAN SAVE £750. <» DAIRY FARMING PROSPECT. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. How many boys can save £750 in 10 years? The an&wer is obviously not many. The Government Youth Centre in Christchurch, however, can offer boys 16 years of age such a prospect. A graph has been prepared and displayed in the centre s office revealing how such a saving is practicable in the farming industry to-day. The table is based on the award wages announced by the Government in September last. Under this award a boy receives £1 a week and lodgings during his first year on a dairy farm. Of this amount the centre has allocated 7/ for pleasure, 7/ to be banked for clothing and 6/ for the building up of a nest egg. At the age of 21 the wage rate has increased by yearly rises to £2 12/6, from which 14/ is still set aside for pleasure and clothing account, leaving £1 18/6 for savings, which by this time have grown to just on £250. At the same rate of saving during the next five years the total amounts to £750. When attention waa drawn to the graph to-day by the secretary (Mr. N. S. Woods), it was pointed out that many openings were available for boys with such ambition. Appalling conditions, he said, still existed on many farms, but the position was rapidly improving and many inquiries were made for boys from farmers who could be relied upon to give lads a fair spin and decent living quarters.
