GROWTH OF SHANGHAI.
Shanghai is a remarkable city of verv quick growth. Eighty years ago there ■ was nothing but a native eitv. Then the I French and afterwards the English obtained concessions from the Chinese Government, an<l gradually a great modern European city grew up on the low fiats of the Woosung River. The middle of the European part of Shanghai resembles a European capital or an American city. The streets are wide and well kept, and contain' magnificent luildings. including a cathedral, a Masonic hall, an imposing courthouse, a large railway station, and many fine hotels. The population of Shanghai, including the suburbs, is over 3,500,00!' or nearly a million more than Paris. There are 290,00*,) families and 1,500.00ti people in the foreign settlements. Normally Shanghai does nearly one-half of the foreign trade of China, the value of thk being about £50,000,000 a year. J
