GOOD PROGRESS.
TENNIS TOURNEY, WOMEN IN SEMI-FINALS. PATTZJrSON'S SARD *BAIILE, As a result of the progress made yesterday in the quarter-final matches of ; the wometw' singles at the annual pro- ] vincial championship tournament con- ] ducted by the Auckland Lawn Tennis , Association, four women remain to con- j test the semi-finals to-morrow afternoon: Misses Margaret Beverley, Matamata, holder of the title; Nessie Beverley, Matamata; B. L. Bishop, Aufckland; and E. Plummer, Hawke's Bay. Miss Plummer will meet Miss X. Beverley, and Miss Bishop will meet Miss M. Beverley. The men left in to contest the quarterfinals of the mens' singles to-day were: R. H. Lewis, X. F. Bedford, J. W. Gunn, W. T. Pountney, R. W. Smith, X. G. Sturt and J. T. Mayson (all of Auckland), and R. G. Pattinson (Canterbury). Further matches were played in the mixed doubles and the men's B grade singles, the fonr in the former section being won in straight sets. Among the four pairs who have entered the semifinals are the holders of the title, J. W. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley. In the second round of the men's singles great interest was taken in the defeat of J. Roach, Waikato's Xo. 1 ranking player, by W. T. Pountney in five sets. Pountney is the holder of the Wanganui, Manawatu and Dannevirke titles, and is Xo. I player few the Campbell Park Club. R. G. Pattinson had a hard task to defeat E. D. Lusk in five strenuous sets. Lusk, who was making his first appearance in an Auckland championship, possesses a fluent style and showed a backhand across court that was perfectly controlled and fast. It was the first five-set match in which Lusk had ever taken part. Pattinson was playing under difficulties owing to a sore foot. In the match between Miss E. Plummet and Miss P. Cooke, with a set each it looked to be anybody's match. The loser, however, made too many errors at a vital stage of the match. Miss M. Beverley, holder of the title, had straight set wins over Mrs. D. G. France (Wellington). Results were:— A GRADE. MEN'S SINGLES. Second Round.—R. H. Lewis beat M. R. Andrews, 3 —6, 6—o. 6—3. 6—4; N.
