"THE MERCY MURDERESS." KILLED HER IMBECILE SON. (By Air Mall.) LONDON, January 6. Mrs. Kathleen Mumford, 40-year-old "mercy murderess," returned to her home in Leeds yesterday and found the flat empty, with no one to welcome her. j Her husband, who, since her trial nine months ago for killing her imbecile son, has led the campaign for her release. did not know that she was to be freed yesterday and did not expect her home until "some time in the New Year." He was at work. Last night, after Mrs. Mumford had seen and thanked her solicitor, Mr. Louis Godlove, husband and wife were reunited. Mr. Mumford saids "Now, before we begin our new life, we will have a short holiday. I've been saving for that ever since my wife's trial." Mrs. Mumford's son Derek was five years old when a doctor said he was incurable. She pleaded with the doctor to end the boy's suffering, and when he refused, said: "If you don't, I will." At her x trial her last words were: "In the eyes of the law I am guilty. In the eyes of God I am not guilty." - Within 48 hours of her sentence the death penalty ««» com muted. .
